Nottinghamshire Residents Call For A Ban On Fracking In County

16th October 2017
News
Anti-fracking Nottinghamshire residents and campaigners were out across the county highlighting the issues of fracking for shale gas.

In Nottingham's Market Square, members of campaign group Frack Free Nottinghamshire blew bubbles to represent the fragile financial state of the fracking industry, comparing it to being as fragile as a bubble.

A spokesperson from Frack Free Nottinghamshire said: "When people and institutions get foolishly enthusiastic and invest their money into what turns out to be a losing gamble this is called a "bubble". When the bubble pops they lose their money. The trouble is that along the road a lot of other people can get hurt - not just the money people."

They continued: "Fracking companies like INEOS and IGas borrow money from suckers to invest in their sub prime energy speculation in the UK - and claim they will regenerate the whole of the economy. Along the way, before the illusion evaporates they can still do a lot of damage - water pollution, noise, atmospheric pollution, damaged farm land. ruined beauty spots.... Don't let it happen - don't let your bank invest in this bubble. Bubbles burst because people lose confidence and stop believing the hype."

Frack Free Nottinghamshire is urging banks and pension funds not to invest or divest in fracking and is asking the public to contact their own.

Meanwhile elsewhere in the County, residents gathered in Misson near Doncaster, where the first exploratory shale gas site is about to start construction. In Edwinstowe, Frack Free Edwinstowe & Sherwood Forest campaigners and residents held a street stall outside the local Co-Op. And in Warsop, Frack Free Warsop campaigners met with Mansfield MP Ben Bradley to discuss fracking.

A spokesperson from Frack Free Sherwood Forest & Edwinstowe said: "We managed to get over 100 signatures and a £20 donation plus new recruits for our group. We were surprised how many people said that they didn't know what fracking was all about. We also managed to talk to a few people who were in favour of fracking and get them to maybe look again at the new evidence even if we didn't get them to change their minds on the spot."

The awareness hasn't stopped there. Frack Free Ashfield will tomorrow be holding a WE CARE about climate change walk around Kings Mill Reservoir, meeting at 10.30am at the Visitors Centre.
