NEWS IN FOCUS | The Changing Face Of Social Media – Staying Safe

Following the concerns raised over an update to popular social media platform SnapChat – this week’s News In Focus looks at the changing face of social media and how youngsters can stay safe online.

SnapChat’s new ‘SnapMap’ feature has seen a number of parents raise concerns about safety, as app-users’ movements are tracked on a map for all their contacts too see, should the in-app settings not be changed accordingly.

This week’s show see’s Craig Priest chat to East Midlands NSPCC Child Online Safety adviser Abbie Gillgan about the application update, to get her views on if app-developers should work more closely with organisations such as the NSPCC to discuss child safety issues, and also shares how influence the NetAware partnership with O2 has been 

The CEO of online parental advice website ‘ChildNet’ Will Gardener also chats to Craig, sharing his views on the development of social media over the last two decades, and gives clear advice on how the ‘SnapMap’ feature works.

Also this week, we take a more in depth look at the issue of ‘Sexting’ as Primary School teachers have become the latest educators in the area to receive special training – Matt Freeman speaks to Charlotte Aynsley and Kingsway Primary School HeadTeacher Sam Bradbury about the shift in focus, from secondary school age to primary age.
