New school outdoor space launched

A Skegby school is hoping to get its pupils away from their iPads, and into the great outdoors, with the opening of new outdoor learning space and pond.

The Skegby Junior Academy is hoping the facility will ad to their 'Forest School' programme, which allows children to explore outdoor environments whilst learning. Rachel Graney, who is part of the Senior Leadership Team, said “what we felt was the children weren't getting the opportunity [to get outdoors] outside of school, and a lot [of them] are very much wanting to play on PlayStations and watch TV... we feel [this facility] really enables them to want to work within Maths, English and other areas of the curriculum as well.”

The space is to be launched with an event to raise money for three charities, including the Dollar for Dawson campaign to raise money for local youngster Dawson Willcock to travel to America for cancer treatment. Ms Graney said “because it's local, it's a cause that's very close to the hearts of those that know him. We're also supporting the DHL Teddy Bear Trust, who helped us to create our sensory gardens and ponds... and Cancer Research UK, because cancer has touched a lot of colleagues [in some way].”

The event is at the Academy on Friday 16th June, between 1.30 and 3.30pm.
