New Leisure Destination For Kirkby A Step Closer

20th June 2017
News, Ashfield

This week a report will go to Cabinet outlining plans for a new flagship leisure destination in Kirkby in Ashfield.

Subject to Cabinet approval Ashfield District Council will proceed with the next steps of an exciting leisure transformation programme.

Following extensive consultation and a feasibility study the planned development will provide Kirkby with a cutting edge family leisure and healthy living destination in the heart of the town.

Plans for the new facility encompass activity opportunities for the whole family and include:

  • Six court sports hall for sporting activities and events

  • Indoor Adventure climbing wall

  • Health & fitness gym with functional training and free weights

  • Multi activity & Group cycling studios

  • Indoor Adventure soft play area

  • Health & Wellbeing suite

Two sites are being considered to replace the Festival Hall Leisure Centre with a new leisure destination, the Festival Hall Leisure Centres current location, and a preferred location on the current Ashfield Health and Wellbeing site.

The next stage of the process will include more detailed discussions with the NHS to try and secure the preferred location.

Ashfield District Council are committed to residents having the opportunity to live healthier lifestyles. The public consultation undertaken as part of the budget setting process in 2016 showed strong support for focusing resources on the larger leisure facilities, Lammas Leisure Centre in Sutton, Festival Hall in Kirkby and Hucknall Leisure Centre. The consultation also showed strong support for an event space that can be used for conferences, award ceremonies as well as attracting entertainment to the centre.

Subject to external funding being secured, the delivery of the project will start towards the end of 2018 and into 2019.

The new leisure facility would deliver improved financial, social, economic and health outcomes to the area. The feasibility study estimates that as much as £16.7m would be brought into the local economy

Cllr Amanda Brown, portfolio holder for Health and Wellbeing adds “This is a really exciting project for Kirkby and will give a real boost to the town centre. Along with Lammas and Hucknall leisure centres, Ashfield will be leading the way in the variety and quality of leisure facilities it provides to its residents”.

Cheryl Butler, Leader of the Council says “The Council is seeking to achieve a ‘win win’ outcome which will see a new leisure centre that supports not only health and wellbeing but also, very welcome town centre regeneration. To achieve this and reduce the Council’s annual revenue cost for our leisure centres, it will require more detailed work and hopefully some external funding to help meet the build costs for the new centre, I very much look forward to the results of these.

I am really pleased that members of Kirkby community have participated in the consultation and that we have taken on board a number of their suggestions.”
