New Figures Show Dementia Is The Leading Cause Of Death In England And Wales
The Office for National Statistics has revealed figures which show Dementia, including Alzheimer’s Disease, has overtaken heart disease as the leading cause of death in England and Wales.
Last year more than 61,000 people died of dementia which was just under 12% of all recorded deaths.
Doctor Amanda Sullivan of the Mansfield & Ashfield Clinical Commissioning Group said “It appears to be that the population is getting older and the older you become, the more likely it is that you get dementia. Over all it’s becoming one of the leading causes of death across the country and that is also true in Mansfield and Ashfield”
The study also found that the bulk of the dementia related deaths recorded where amongst women, with dementia and Alzheimer disease accounting for 15.2% of all female deaths.
