National Praise For Nottinghamshire County Council’s Work For Residents With Dementia
Nottinghamshire County Council are celebrating after receiving praise for being the only local authority in England, to produce specially tailored information for residents with dementia.
The national Charity the Alzheimer’s Society made “mystery shopper” like calls to 60 English councils, asking about personal budgets for the callers mother, who was recently diagnosed with Dementia.
The research also concluded that the information on the councils website on personal budgets is ‘Good’ – a rating which only a third of local authorities received.
Councillor Muriel Weisz, the Chair of the County Council’s Adult Social Care and Health Committee said “I think it’s important to people at those early stages, because often that first diagnosis, or that first anxiety about dementia – families or the individuals concerned just don’t know where to go for support”.
“Having some information that moves things on in a helpful way is particularly appreciated. The leaflet we have was developed with a couple where one of the partners had developed dementia and the carer had been struggling”
“Being a family member of someone who you can see is changing; it can be very scary so some people delay having a discussion about it because they just don’t what’s going to come out of it.”
“Sometimes people’s knowledge of dementia is kind of fifth hand and the stories are more of the negative impacts which is very challenging. My mother developed dementia in her late 50’s and it was a very anxious time – I would have been grateful for the sort of information that we are now providing.”
