Music That Really Moves Me

15th September 2016

Music That Really Moves Me

We have just come back from a shopping trip. It involved a number of stores and a couple of trendy cafés and I was struck by how often they were playing great music. In a number of cases this was music from the 50s and 60s . Fats Domino, Dean Martin and Chuck Berry featured strongly at one, whilst the soul genre was favoured by others. Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and Otis Redding were all in good voice on their classic hits. It’s all accessible stuff but more welcome than easy listening musac.

The only problem I have is that I find it difficult to keep still. It’s a bit like that scene from The Full Monty when the men who are learning to dance are standing in the queue at the job centre and they can’t stop themselves from moving to the beat.

The real plus for me is that I get inspiration for records to play on Jukebox Giants. I hear songs I haven’t played for months and make a mental note to put them in the next show. What also interests me is that these commercial companies are choosing 50s, 60s, rock ‘n’ roll and soul music to create the right atmosphere for their outlets. They obviously feel that the music is timeless and has wide appeal across generations. I guess that shouldn’t surprise anyone, least of all me!
