Memorial Listings Will Ensure “We Will Remember Them” For Generations To Come
Over the next few days, thousands of people will flock to war memorials across our area, showing their respect for those who made sacrifices for our armed forces.
And Conservation Bosses at Nottinghamshire County Council say work is being undertaken to ensure the memorials remain a focus of remembrance, by giving them protected “listed” status.
There are eight war memorials in Sutton-In-Ashfield and six in Mansfield. One of the memorials listed in our area has been the one located in Sutton-In-Ashfield at New Cross which has also recently been moved.
Jason Mordan is a Senior Practitioner for Historic Buildings at Nottinghamshire County Council
“I was contacted about that by the New Cross residents in 2008 and after some deliberation about where it would be best moved too, it was decided on its present location. In the process we also cleaned it but probably the most important part of the process was recreating the inscription panels. Without the names themselves there to read, it’s lost part of its poignancy and its roll in remembrance”
“it’s very important for communities to be able to reflect (on what former forces men & women did) on that and commemorate”
