Meeting To Help Save Heart Surgery Takes Places Tomorrow

Campaigners opposed to the ending of congenital heart surgery at Glenfield hospital in Leicester are calling on people to help save the centre by filling in a consultation questionnaire, by attending a meeting at Mansfield Central Library Tomorrow.

They claim NHS England’s document is not easy to respond to because it is “not straightforward”. The Save Glenfield Children’s Heart Centre campaign have organised a meeting in Mansfield, one of a series of meetings across the East Midlands to help people engage with the public consultation currently taking place.

Mansfield area families with children who have used this centre, or are still patients there, are being asked to attend.

Unite Nottinghamshire NHS branch secretary, Jon Dale, said "Local families who are dealing with their children's very worrying heart conditions would be faced with the extra burden of having to travel even further for treatment if Glenfield closed."

NHS England, which wants to close the only centre carrying out congenital heart surgery in the East Midlands, has an online questionnaire people can fill in.

Leicester’s hospital trust has also put information online to help people at eastmidlandscongenitalheart.nhs.uk

Parent of a heart patient and campaign chair, Steve Score, said: “They have not made it easy for people to respond, the questions are not always straightforward. People want more information than they can get from reading the NHS England material and they want it put in a clearer way”

“But if there is a low response level because people are unaware of what they can do and how to do it, that may provide the excuse to go ahead with closure.”

“This is why we are organising meetings across the region to allow people to come along and ask questions. After all, if the proposals go through, the East Midlands will be the only region in the country without this kind of centre. These meetings will be more local and convenient for people to get to. Frankly this is what NHS England are not properly doing after their one public meeting, of restricted size,  held in Leicester in mid week!”

“Help us save the centre at Glenfield. Come to the meetings and fill in the questionnaire.”

The consultation will end in mid-July. For more info - Contact: Steve Score 07737978057
