Mansfield Burglaries Fall To New Low

Numbers have fallen to their lowest levels in recent memory and Notts Police say it's thanks to the relentless targeting of offenders and increased support for victims.

In the six months to October 2021 a total of 96 residential burglary offences were recorded in Mansfield  – an annual reduction of 47.5 per cent and the lowest ever number for the same period since comparable figures were first compiled in 2003.

The town has traditionally suffered from a relatively high number of burglaries when compared to other areas of Nottinghamshire.

In 2019 this led to the introduction of a multi-faceted burglary reduction plan, which set out a range of effective enforcement, prevention, intelligence and information sharing measures.

Specific measures have included targeted patrols on in the top 20 most burgled streets in the district, increased detection training for officers, and an increase in officer numbers.

Known offenders, meanwhile, have been hit with an array of measures designed to make their lives difficult as possible.

Residents in certain areas have also been supported to improve their home security, and more regular checks made on the retail outlets commonly used to pass on stolen goods.

Many of the most prolific local burglars have also been handed restrictive Criminal Behaviour Orders which prohibit them from doing certain things – such as carrying common house-breaking tools or even standing on somebody else’s driveway.

Breaches are treated as criminal offences and suspects are very often recalled immediately to prison.

Inspector Nick Butler, district commander for Mansfield, said: “Burglary is a distressing and invasive crime that can have a very long-lasting impact on the lives of victims. Some people can feel so violated by the invasion into their home that they feel compelled to move.

“Very few other crimes can have that kind of impact on people, which is why we have worked so hard to clamp down on offenders and better support victims.

“Several years ago residential burglaries in Mansfield were at unacceptably high levels. Too many residents were falling victim – often to the same repeat offenders. In response we put in place a bold but relatively simple plan to make life as difficult as possible for offenders.

“We have also been supported in this work by the presence of our proactive Operation Reacher Team, and also by the interlocution of our specialist burglary reduction officer as part of the local Safer Streets Initiative.

“It is really pleasing to see that this approach has been working so effectively. Indeed, it is now clear that there hasn’t been a worse time in recent memory to be a Mansfield-based burglar.”

Nottinghamshire Police now has two designated teams of detectives focussed on tracking down and locking up burglars.

In April 2021 burglaries across the county fell by 34 per cent.  In the 12 months to April 2009 there were 2,925 domestic burglaries in the Mansfield district. I

n the 12 months to March 2020 there were just 760.

Thanks to the introduction of the burglary reduction plan this number fell in the following year to 467, and is on track to fall still further by the end of the current financial year.

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Caroline Henry said: “This is a fantastic result and credit goes to the hardworking officers in Mansfield for their persistent approach to combat these despicable crimes.

“I hope these figures give some reassurance to the community that the relentless efforts being undertaken to protect them and their property is making a positive difference. Thanks to Safer Streets, an extra £432,000 is being invested into security measures in the Mansfield area which will boost this work further and spare even more residents the distress of becoming a victim of crime."
