Mansfield Big Snore Gets Ever Closer
A charity working with homeless people in Mansfield is urging local people of all ages to sleep out so other don’t have to.
Framework, which helps homeless people across Nottinghamshire, will hold its annual Mansfield Big Snore sponsored sleep out event on Friday, March 23rd at West Nottinghamshire College’s Derby Road campus in Mansfield.
The event, sponsored by Nottingham Building Society, will bring together participants of all ages at a fun, family friendly event in aid of a serious cause.
Event participants are encouraged to spend a night in a cardboard box in return for sponsorship money from friends, family and colleagues. The event will be held in a safe, secure area of the college grounds between 7pm and 6am.
Money raised at this year’s event will support the work of Framework’s Street Outreach Team, which supports people sleeping on the street into accommodation and treatment.
Collette Acton, Manager of Framework’s County Outreach Team, said: “Rough sleeping has been a big problem in Mansfield for a long time, partly as a result of years of under-investment in support services. But over the last year or so much good work has taken place to support the most vulnerable people in our society off the streets for good. Framework’s street outreach team has been supported in this work by a real community effort, involving the police, the council, members of the political community, faith and community groups.
“What I love about the Mansfield Big Snore is the opportunity it gives to members of the public to do their bit to help. Money raised by events like this allows us to give people the specialist help they need and get them off the streets for good. It supports our specialist outreach nurse, who brings medical assistance to people on the streets, and in recent weeks has literally allowed us to keep people alive by getting them into temporary accommodation.”
The event was begun by members of St Mark’s Church, Mansfield, in 2004, to raise money to buy a new washing machine for the Sherwood Street Hostel. Since them the event has grown and grown.
Framework asks for all participants to raise a minimum of £50. Securing your place requires a small payment – a non-refundable £10 fee for adults and £5 for people aged 5-16 years. People under 18 cannot take part individually: responsible adults must complete registration for minors.
