Mansfield Bakery Fined

A Mansfield bakery which has continually failed to label its products correctly to protect consumers with allergies has been fined almost £400 at the town's Magistrates’ Court.
Sandra Hawkins of Family Bakers on Ratcliffe Gate, Mansfield, pleaded guilty to three offences against the Food Safety Act 1990 for not including in her labels correct quantities of ingredients and allergenic substances that may be present in her products.
Family Bakers has a shop and delivery business supplying other shops and vending machines in the wider area in and around Mansfield.
Nottinghamshire County Council’s Trading Standards officers gave the business detailed advice on labelling on numerous occasions and issued four improvement notices to address the issue. Although some changes were made, the labels were still not compliant with food safety legislation.
Councillor Gordon Wheeler, Vice-Chair of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Communities and Place Committee, said: “Many people have severe food allergies that can be life threatening so it’s vital products are clearly labelled with their ingredients.
“The magistrates recognised the seriousness of this business’s flagrant disregard of the law and said that they had to get their act together.”
