Major Refurb Planned For Sutton's Indoor Market

Imagery showing how Sutton’s Indoor Market’s major refurbishment will look is set to be unveiled to the public later this week.

The Indoor Market Hall, sited within the Idlewells Shopping Centre, is to undergo a revamp which will reshape its layout and improve the choice of products available to shoppers.

The architects’ designs have already been well received with the Markets’ traders, who have been working with design consultants to reshape its layout and increase the choice of products available to shoppers.

Plans for the refurbishment are on track to start in early 2017 with the new market hall staying open for business throughout the project.

Deputy Leader of the Council, Cllr. Don Davis, said: “These are really exciting times and we will be supporting our traders throughout the works. Ensuring that the market hall remains open during the refurbishment is our number one priority and I’m delighted that the plan for the development works allow for trading to continue throughout the scheme.

“We are sharing these images of how the market will look will enable the public see the exciting changes and improvements which are going to be happening in the New Year.”

The Sutton Indoor Market improvements form part of the Council’s programme for regenerating town centres across the district. The planned work is based on an evidence base gathered from detailed consultation with traders and shoppers.

Plans are also underway to establish a more commercial and enterprising approach to the District’s markets and town centres with Cabinet approving recommendations to recruit a Market Retail Manager to focus on this area.

At their meeting on October 13th, councillors agreed a post of retail specialist who would be able to contribute positively to future plans and the overall review of the service, making sure it delivers good value for money and a best in class offer for traders and shoppers.

The Markets Retail Manager post would focus on creating and developing commercial opportunities for both indoor and outdoor markets to maximise income and improve the district’s retail offer. This post would help plans to reinvigorate and refresh Ashfield’s town centre experience, providing vibrant town centres that offer a real variety of goods and services.
