Locals urged to check in on elderly neighbours and relatives following weekend snowfall

Health officials are urging people to take the time to check in on elderly relatives and neighbours following a weekend which has seen the Mansfield and Ashfield area covered in snow.

The cold conditions can often prevent the elderly from leaving their homes to stock up on items such as food and drink, whilst many who live alone can become more isolated.

It’s also feared that due to the cold weather and drop in temperatures, central heating systems can stop working or become faulty – leaving residents without heating or hot water.

Mansfield District Councillor Joyce Bosnjak says “It’s not to go around and nag them; it’s to go around and test yourself – ask, is it cold when you walk into the property? When did they last have a drink? – Offer to make them a drink if that is what they want”

“It becomes a little bit more informal than knocking on the door and just saying ‘is your heating switched on’ Small gestures like that I think can make a lot of difference particularly when a lot of elderly people tend to sit around a lot”
