I managed to pay a visit to local non-league side Clipstone on Tuesday night as part of the 2016/17 Harrison Football Tour and was treated to an excellent home display.
They won 3-0 at home to a Barton Town Old Boys side who had tasted victory only once so far this season – bizarrely, a 7-0 thrashing of hosts Retford United – and who were down to ten men when Tom Waudby was red carded after half-an-hour.
Clipstone, led by assistant Paul Rockley as boss Billy Fox was away on holiday, were in control before they got the numerical advantage and two quickfire long range goals just before half-time from Nathan Forbes and Joshua Nodder put them in control.
Michael Trench then ended a sweeping move on the hour mark to make it 3-0 and game over.
It was an impressive performance and one that should be a great springboard for a Clipstone side that have been so far a little bit too inconsistent for their liking.
But, they are unbeaten in three games, having conceded just once in that time, and they now face Pickering Town on Saturday.
It should be an interesting atmosphere for that game as a fun fair will be well underway on a patch of land directly next to the ground.
The fair had already been set up on Tuesday but was in full darkness – let's hope it doesn't steal any of the limelight from the Cobras on Saturday.
You can hear a full post-match interview with Paul Rockley on Sportstalk on Friday 16th September at 6pm on Mansfield 103.2.
