Guinness World Record Holder To Do Mansfield 10K
Joining the hundreds of runners at next weekend’s Mansfield 10K, will be a very special competitor. Not only is Anthony Allsopp a Guinness World Record holder, but at the age of 77, he is also the oldest person taking part in this year’s event.
Anthony holds the record for the oldest male to walk from Lands End to John O’Groats. The challenge, which he completed for the second time in 2015 aged 75, took him 50 days.
To practice for the 10K, Mansfield-born Anthony has been power walking around the town. He says, “I usually do longer walks, but have been practicing power walking for this event. I don’t use walking sticks, but always take an umbrella with me whenever I go for a walk.”
Having previously completed the Mansfield 10K in 1 hour 35 minutes, Anthony is hoping to complete this year’s event in just 90 minutes. His wife Beryl will be there supporting him and cheering him on, along with the huge crowds that come into Mansfield town centre to watch the event.
Anthony has been inspired to take part in the 10K by his daughter, Maria, who works at Reach Learning Disability’s base in Mansfield. Reach supports people with learning disabilities to reach beyond their expectations and make a good life for themselves in their local communities. The Mansfield 10K raises much-needed funds to help Reach continue their work.
Now in its third year, the Mansfield 10K – with the addition of a new 5K route – has attracted a huge amount of interest from runners and walkers alike. Reach Fundraising Officer, Sarah Cobb, says “we are already up on numbers from last year and hope to reach 1000 entries by this weekend.”
The Mansfield 5K and 10K take place on Sunday 17th September. For the event to run smoothly and safely, road closures will be in place in the town centre for a short time that morning. Roads inside the ring road will be affected as well as St Peter’s Way and Rosemary Street which will be closed anti- clockwise only.
It looks like this year’s Mansfield 10k is going to be a sell-out. We are encouraging runner to sign up to avoid disappointment as registration on the day will now not be possible. There may still be places left to join Anthony and the hundreds of others taking part in this year’s Mansfield 10K by booking your place at http://www.mansfield10k.co.uk/.
