Gritters Set To Be Out Tonight

6th March 2018
News

While the reign of the ‘Beast from the East’ may be over – Nottinghamshire County Council's gritting crews remain on 24 hours standby and are set to be out gritting main routes tonight with road temperatures forecast to be below freezing.

More gritting runs are due later this week, subject to weather conditions.

Last week our crews were working around the clock to help the county stay on the move before, during and after the recent spell of wintry weather. Since last Monday, gritters were out 15 times and additional ploughing runs were undertaken, clocking up at least 37,500 kms.

Gritting team manager Kevin Heathcote of Via East Midlands, which delivers highways services on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, including winter maintenance, said:

“We thank the public for all their support and patience last week – particularly for all the positive comments saying what a great job our teams were doing in such tough conditions.

“Our teams remain on 24 hour standby, which has been the case since last November, as we expect more gritting runs will be needed later this week, and while no further snow is forecast, road temperatures are set to be below zero.”

All gritting lorries have a GPS tracking system installed and CCTV which provides a visible record of every route gritted.
Our four gritting depots situated across the county at Markham Moor, Bilsthorpe, Newark and Gamston.

The county’s salt supplies are being constantly reviewed, with stock levels currently being topped up.

In addition to salting roads, the County Council and Via maintain and fill around 1,380 roadside grit bins across the county for use by local communities. They also work closely with district and parish councils to ensure the maximum practical winter support can be provided to communities across the county.
