FISH THEFT ON THE RISE ACROSS NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

Warning signs are being installed at 100 lakes, rivers and watercourses across the county to combat the rising problem of fish theft.

There were 19 reported incidents of thefts in the last year and Glyn Gilfoyle the Chair of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Community Safety explained why they have teamed up with the Police and Angling Trust, “To make people aware that in reality if you are fishing you should be actually putting the fish back in to the watercourse and not taking it away.”

Councillor Gilfoyle spoke about what else will be on the warning signs, “Information about if they do see anybody who is actually doing that to report it to the police it is theft and it will be treated as such.”

Fishing clubs across our area are becoming increasingly concerned about the destruction of fish stocks, its impact on the natural environment and local economy because theft of good quality carp may be worth in excess of £2,000, which can also have a negative impact on businesses connected to fishing lakes.

Chief Inspector at Nottinghamshire Police Andy Rooke said, “They will take the appropriate action in each individual case, which may include prosecution through the courts.”
