Evidence On 23 Criminal Suspects Handed To Prosecutors On Hillsborough Case
Hillsborough investigators have handed over evidence relating to 23 criminal suspects to prosecutors, it has been announced.
Inquiries into the 1989 disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans died at the FA Cup Semi-Final between Nottingham Forest and Liverpool, were launched by the Independent Police Complaints Commission and Operation Resolve following the publication of the Hillsborough Independent Panel report in 2012.
A spokesman for the criminal investigations said that of the 23 suspects whose files had been handed over to the Crown Prosecution Service, 15 were connected with inquiries into the causes of the tragedy.
Mansfield 103.2s Managing Director Tony Delahunty was at the match, covering Nottingham Forest for an East Midlands station – he said “It’s going to take a little time before the CPS decide whether to prosecute and how many and if they’ve got strong enough evidence to do it, but they must feel that they have a case on the face of it. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens now but the relatives of the 96 (who died during the tragedy) will see this at least as a more deep enquiry to things that they wanted to happen for a very, very long time.”
“At this stage the evidence is laid before the CPS – they consider the evidence and of the 23, it may well be that some might face criminal allegations and face trial for those. Now it’s down to the CPS and the relatives of the 96 people will be saying that this at least has gone a lot further than it had done for a very long time.”
