Council To Continue Battle Against Car Cruising

12th December 2017
News, Ashfield

Ashfield District Council are looking to bring in a new Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) to tackle Car Cruising in the district.

Car Cruising has been a particular problem on Junction 27 of the M1 Motorway and the Hucknall bypass in recent years.

The issue is currently being tackled by Nottinghamshire Police who are enforcing an Injunction obtained by Nottinghamshire County Council. This Injunction currently prohibits car cruising in these areas but expires in January 2018.

Partner discussions have been undertaken including Nottinghamshire Police, Nottinghamshire County Council Community Safety Team, Nottinghamshire County Council Highways and the Council in respect of the way forward in tackling Car Cruising post January 2018.

Nottinghamshire County Council has indicated that it does not intend to apply for renewal or extension of the current Injunction, triggering Ashfield District Council’s decision to create a new PSPO to tackle the ongoing issue.

Speaking at a recent Cabinet meeting, Councillor Nicolle Ndiweni, Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities, said, “Car Cruising in these areas has been a significant problem for a number of years.

The enforcement of the current injunction has been successful and has helped to reduce car cruising and thus improve public safety”.

Councillor Don Davis, Ward Councillor for Annesley and Kirkby Woodhouse and Deputy Leader of the Council, said, “This is a strong response to a real nuisance in our area. A nuisance that could have serious health and safety consequences for Ashfield residents.

There are still vehicles attending the location from both inside and outside the district with intention of car cruising so this PSPO will be important in deterring this kind of behaviour”.

In accordance with statutory requirements, prior to approval of a PSPO, the Council is will to undertake formal consultation. This will be for the duration of just over five weeks, meaning a new order could come into force by February.
