Council Tax Premium To Rise
A motion has been passed at Cabinet allowing the Council to increase the Council Tax premium on properties that have been empty over two years.
The Rating (Property in Common Occupation) and Council Tax (Empty Dwellings) Bill, which will be agreed by Parliament shortly, will allow councils to increase the empty property premiums to help reduce the number of empty domestic properties by encouraging owners to ensure their properties are occupied, increasing the available housing stock in the district.
Following the introduction of the legislation on 1st April 2019, Ashfield District Council will have the power to apply this premium based on the number of years the properties have remained empty:
Empty 2-4 years – 100% premium to total Council tax bill
Empty 5-10 years – 200% premium to total Council Tax bill (effective from 1 April 2020)
Empty over 10 years – 300% premium to total Council tax bill (effective from 1 April 2021)
Cllr Jason Zadrozny, Leader of Ashfield District Council says “Reducing the number of empty properties within the district is a key priority for this administration. At a time when affordable, family housing is at an all time low we are committed to doing all we can to bring these properties, that often a blight our communities, back into use.”
“This is not a way for the Council to make extra money, but a way of encouraging the owners of these properties to bring them back into use, benefiting both themselves and the local community.”
Notices will be sent to the owners of all unoccupied dwellings that have been empty over two years in January 2019 informing them about the forthcoming change.
