Council Move To Deal With Travellers

31st July 2018
News, Ashfield

Ashfield District Council have taken a number of steps to deal with travellers on Sutton Lawn.

Park users and residents of Bramley Court, Sutton which backs onto the site have complained after 10 caravans entered the park.

The land which the travellers are camped on is owned by Sutton Academy but the Council are working with the school to draft an eviction order.

Community Protection Officers have been on site and the Council's environmental team have been to remove any rubbish and minimalise any disruption at the park.

Sutton Campaigner David Hennigan who raised the issue with the Council said, "I would like to thank Ashfield District Council for their swift response.  Both County Councillor Samantha Deakin and myself have been on site all morning to reassure residents and park users.  We have met with Community Protection Officers, Council Leader Jason Zadrozny and senior Council Officers on Sutton Lawn to get to grips with the situation quickly.  This is the worst possible time for this to happen with the School Holidays starting but the park was extremely busy this morning and we'd like it to stay that way.  We'd like to reassure park users that our park is safe to continue to enjoy."

Leader of Ashfield District Council, Councillor Jason Zadrozny said, "Sutton Lawn is one of our busiest parks - especially in the summer holidays.  The Irish Travellers came on the park this morning (30.07.18) - they came after being moved on from Berry Hill in Mansfield.  We've helped Sutton Academy, who own  the land affected to draw up an eviction order, we've had our wardens on there and they will be doing regular patrols to reassure local people and park users.  Ashfield District Council is doing all it can and we will continue to work to ensure that minimal disruption is caused and that families can continue to enjoy using our park. I'm bitterly disappointed that Mansfield District Council failed to notify us that they moved them on and our open spaces were under threat from travellers on the move.  I will be raising this with the Mayor of Mansfield as they could have been a better neighbour."

Councillor Samantha Deakin, County Councillor for the area said, "We have started a dialogue with the travellers and they seem peaceful and open to conversation.  There are nearly 20 children on the camp and their safety needs to be taken into consideration.  Bearing this in mind, please steer clear of the site and please don't incite them.  Residents of Bramley Court, Sutton which back onto the site have had enough problems lately.  I would like to let them and park users know that we are doing everything within our power to move them on.

Officers from the Council’s Private Enforcement Team have visited the encampment this morning and engaged with the occupiers of the site, made up of ten caravans, adults and children.

The Council takes the concerns of local residents seriously, we are working to ensure eviction notices are issued and the site cleared as soon as possible.
