"Council Decision Could Spell The End Of Democracy As We Know It"

13th July 2018
News, Ashfield
Leader of Ashfield District Council - Councillor Jason Zadrozny has described the decision of Nottinghamshire County Council to kickstart the process of getting rid of District Councils in the County as a '...disaster for places like the Ashfield District.'  He was speaking after a last minute deal between the Conservatives and the Mansfield Independent Forum ensured that the Council will now be making a formal business case to get rid of the 7 District Councils.  It is recommended that there will be one 'super-council' - covering the whole of the County.

Speaking after a fraught County Council Meeting, Councillor Zadrozny, the Leader of the Ashfield District Council said, "Today is a sad day for politics in our County.  Localism has simply gone out of the window.  The County Council are talking about providing services 'all under one roof.  This will mean that if the Conservatives get their way - our Council will be a remote outpost which will lead to a deterioration of services."

Councillor Zadrozny, who is calling for a referendum on the issue claimed at the meeting that the Ashfield Independents will fight the plans '...tooth and nail.' and is considering his options over the way forward.  He said, "There is now nothing stopping for example, Mansfield District Council or Broxtowe District Council working to amalgamate and create our own Councils.  We share some services already  The Conservatives in Nottinghamshire are blaming the lack of money but it is their Government who have done more damage to our District Councils since they were created in 1974."

The Conservatives claim that this is an attempt to save cash.  Councillor Zadrozny revealed at the meeting that the who reorganisation of Local Government across Nottinghamshire could cost well over £100million.  This is not included the rebranding - which is set to cost over £30million alone.  This is an ill thought, grubby short sighted attempt to change the way our Council works for political gain.  County Council Leader Kay Cutts claims that the people of the County will 'wholeheartedly support her plans' - I say ask the people and therefore there should be a referendum so that local people can have their voice heard.  After all, they are the people that matter."
