Could You Be A Foster Carer?

Nottinghamshire County Council are encouraging more people to consider becoming a Foster Carer, and will hold drop-in events across the next month to provide more information to those looking to Foster.

Kirkby-In-Ashfield Foster Parent Lorna Watt has Fostered a number of Children across the last six years says “you’ve got to first get the trust of the child, most children come in and they don’t know you, they don’t know who you are, they don’t trust you so you’ve got to earn their trust and then you’ll start building confidence – it’s one of the hardest things you can do for a child actually, each child is different.”

Over the years Lorna and Stephen have fostered 11 teenagers, a mix of girls and boys, and at one stage they had three boys living with them.

“They really do become part of the family. We help with everyday things like homework and exams and advise them on future career choices,” Lorna added.

“Each child is different and when you get to know them you realise what they can achieve, so you set them goals. When they achieve those goals it’s the most fantastic feeling.”

The County Council currently has 795 looked-after children within the county -  484 of these children are aged 11 or over and may be part of sibling groups of two, three or more children aged five or older.

Fostering service manager Naomi Sills said “As well as fostering offering carers an opportunity to give something back, broaden or change their horizons, and feel the rewards of changing a child’s life, we also provide them with excellent support and training. You just need to be loving, understanding and resilient and have the personality to make a positive impact on children’s lives.”

The Council will be holding drop-in events at the following libraries over the next few months for people thinking about fostering:

•          Sutton-in-Ashfield - Wed 18 Jan 4-6pm

•          Mansfield, Four Seasons Centre, West Gate, NG18 1NH - Thu 16 Feb 3.15-5.15pm

•          Edwinstowe, High Street, NG21 9QS - Tue 21 Mar 4-6pm

•          Blidworth, New Lane, NG21 0PW - Wed 26 Apr 4-5.45pm

•          Worksop, Memorial Avenue, S80 2BP - Thu 18th May 4-6pm.
