Community playwrights given chance to shine by council initiative

A new project has been set up by Mansfield District council, which takes theatre and acting out into the community.

The scheme, called “Played In” sees the works of local amateur writers being brought to life by professional actors at various venues across the community, including pubs, clubs and churches.

Fourteen playwrights gathered views and stories from individuals and groups across the region, which went on to inspire a series of short plays.

Andrew Tucker, Cultural Services Manager at Mansfield Palace Theatre said: “you can sit next to a total stranger, and laugh out loud with them, cry with them and have a wonderful time.”

“It’s not just educational, because some things are of an educational nature, they can just be really good fun.”

Christopher Neal, Education Manager at the Palace Theatre said the project was particularly special.

He said: “When you have grown something in your community that was informed by the community, that engagement is a very powerful one.”

The “Played in” initiative is the subject of a special ‘News in Focus’ programme on Mansfield 103.2, click HERE to listen to that programme.
