Car Bank Park Holds Memorial For Fallen Sherwood Foresters
At 11am this morning, the country fell silent to remember those who never made it home from numerous conflicts throughout the generations. At Mansfield’s Car Bank Park, Former service men & women, along with local school pupils and executive Mayor Kate Allsop – fell silent to remember members of the Sherwood Foresters.
The foresters fought 100 years ago at the Battle of the Somme, and in a reading before the tradition two minutes silence, Reverend David Fudger paid tribute to the memories of those who never made it home.
“As we gather here today, we probably gather at a moment of huge importance in our history because we’re remembering those who’ve given their lives in the last two major wars this country has fought, and in the subsequent wars – especially today remembering those gallant men who fell on July 1st 1916 at the Battle of the Somme, six men from Mansfield died on that day. We’re here on a very special day, to remember exactly what happened one hundred years ago.”
Year six pupils from St Phillip Neri School in Mansfield were among several who laid a wreath of remembrance, teacher Daniel Cook explained why the school were in attendance “We’ve been working in World War Two but we do remember at this time every year because we think it’s quite important as a school that the next generation of children don’t forget what was done for them by all people that served in all wars. We do particularly look at World War One and Two, and worry that as there not that many of the generation around, we need to ensure the memory of what they did is remembered by this generation”
Pupil Holly Hughes added “it’s a very special day, because they did something really big for us and I think it’s good that we remember them because if it wasn’t for them, we might not be here today.”
