Ben Bradley Responds To Comments
Mansfield MP Ben Bradley has responded to comments he made in historic controversial blog post.
The town's Member of Parliament posted a video on his Facebook page.
Last week he came under fire for saying that unemployed people should get vasectomies.
The 28 year old made the comments on a blog post back in 2012. in it he is said to have put the UK would become "a vast sea of unemployed wasters" if people on benefits had too many children. The post was written in support of benefit cuts made in that year by the coalition government.
He won the seat in June last year in a shock victory that saw the Conservative Party win in Mansfield for the first time ever.
"It's important to say that I have apologised for the language that I have used and any offence that was caused. I was 21, I was a student with no real responsibilities. I'm now a married father of two, member of parliament. Clearly I have grown up."
Mr. Bradley went on to talk about what has happened to him in the last week or so, "If my experience of being told to kill myself on hundreds of occasions over the last week, of death threats, of journalists showing up at my elderly grandparents' house to try and get comments, or messaging my friends becomes a normal experience. Then I don't know how I can go out there and tell young people that it's a good thing to go into public life."
He finished the video with, "I have apologised for what I've said, I can't unsay it. I can't promise I won't ever cock up in the future but what I said at the election is that I will shout up for Mansfield and I will raise the local issues that matter to people in Mansfied."
"I will continue to do that and I hope my constituents will judge me on that basis."
