Amber and Blue skies ahead for the Stags
Amber and Blue skies ahead for the Stags?
Now the new football season is getting into full swing, we can probably permit ourselves a peek at the league tables – and, on the whole, they make pretty reading for our local sides. Mansfield Town's march up the table has been built mainly on strong away performances, and hearing the Stags doing so well on their travels has almost turned Studio 1 on a Saturday afternoon into an extension of the terraces. Even when the result maybe hasn't been to the Stags' liking, one of my favourite parts of the show on a Saturday is when we get Adam Murray's post-match thoughts. From describing a recent win as one of the best in his career, to saying he'd rather stick pins in his eyes after a goalless draw, it's refreshing to hear a manager who won't hide behind cliches after a game.
Even Murray, though, would struggle to match the enthusiasm shown by AFC Mansfield boss Rudy Funk, as their historic FA Cup run continues. Speaking to him after their latest win reminded me just how big a boost a surprise run of success can bring a team and its community. AFC are now just three wins from the first round proper of the cup, where the Stags enter the competition – an all-Mansfield clash, with Murray and Funk on the sidelines, would really be something to savour.
