AFC Mansfield Win Another Game Of Football
A much more comfortable win for Mansfield Town last weekend, no need for a 94th minute winner.
Alex MacDonald, Will Atkinson and Danny Rose put The Stags 3-0 up before the visitors got a late consolation. That win put them within one point of the automatic promotion spots, just behind rivals Notts County.
MacDonald’s impressive form continued with a cracking goal just before half-time. Clubs were already sniffing around the 27 year old last month and with performances and goals like that there are no surprises. Up next for Steve Evans and his players is a trip to playoff chasing Swindon.
As we saw on Deadline Day there was plenty of movement in and out of The City Ground, but it didn’t bring instant success for Nottingham Forest as they were swept aside by an inform Fulham side. Goals in the second half from Lucas Piazon and Stefan Johansen made it three straight defeats for The Reds to leave them 16th in the table.
Derby County got back to winning ways after two 0-0 draws beating Brentford 3-0 at Pride Park.
The visitors had Sergi Canos sent off on 21 minutes, then on the half hour mark Tom Huddlestone opened his Rams account after 125 games and 15 years since his debut. Cameron Jerome then effectively ended the game four minutes later with his first goal since joining from Norwich last month.
There was still time for Matej Vydra’s customary goal though as he scored a penalty in added on time. The win only kept Derby on pace due to Wolves (1st), Aston Villa (3rd), Cardiff (4th) and Fulham (5th) all winning.
After a poor run of form Notts County fans would’ve been wondering what was coming after they went a goal down early on in their game against Crewe. No need to worry though as The Magpies eventually ran out comfortable 4-1 winners. An important win for them as it keeps the (just) above Mansfield Town.
Just the 5-1 win for AFC Mansfield on Saturday who showed absolutely no signs of slowing down. The Bulls have played more games than anyone else in NCEL Premier Division but now have an 18 point lead at the top.

Oli Fearon’s hat-trick along with one each from Connor Smythe and James Ghaichem meant that Rudy Funk’s men have won 12, yes 12 in a row. Eat your heart out Pep Guardiola.
Elsewhere in the top division Clipstone were beaten for the 26th time this season leaving them still with just that one point they got a few weeks ago now. It was a 3-0 defeat away to Worksop Town. Up next though prime time for The Cobras to get some points with form books and all that going out the window when Rainworth Miners Welfare (who had no game last weekend) go to the Worksop Van Hire Stadium.
NCEL Division One’s big game of the weekend saw two sides in our area clashed. Ollerton Town went to FC Bolsover and picked up a 1-0 win thanks to Sam West’s second half goal. It leaves Bolsover in a precarious position, third bottom on 21 points, just five above the bottom. Ollerton Town however move to the heady heights of 13th with the victory.
Shirebrook Town didn’t have a game and remain in 5th.
East Midlands Counties cracking title race that I bigged up on Friday remains totally unchanged as neither Teversal (1st, 57pts), Anstey Nomads (2nd, 50pts) or Selston (3rd,50pts) played. So I can just copy and paste the stuff from Friday in for this weekend and just change the fixtures.
Into February now, Mansfield Town are serious contenders. All change but no change for Nottingham Forest. Derby remain on course. AFC Mansfield last failed to win a game in about 1992. Ollerton Town move to mid-table in their first ever NCEL campaign and the world keeps on turning.
